ICYMI: We Held a Massive Car Meet before Formula DRIFT Round 1... and it was Awesome!
A few nights before Round 1 of Formula DRIFT kicked off in Long Beach, we were lucky enough to work with TYPE S ambassador Larry Chen, Formula DRIFT, and Fujiwara Tofu Cafe to host the best car meet SoCal enthusiasts have seen in a long time.
We wanted to throw it back to the roots of the import street culture that bolstered the tremendous growth of the aftermarket automotive industry, and celebrate the rides that built it. Fujiwara Tofu Cafe in El Monte was the perfect spot to throw a party and bring all our car friends out to hang out and see some TYPE S products in action.
One thing was certain as the sun set and the energy turned up: underglow lighting is as popular as ever and we’re honored to be at the forefront.
The El Monte cafe is modeled after the tofu cafe in the anime series Initial D, which follows character Takumi as he learns to drift in the mountains during his delivery runs. The real-life cafe owner even drives a replica of Takumi’s family car - the hachi-roku (or an AE86 Corolla, if you’re new to the scene).
If you’re in SoCal and haven’t checked out Fujiwara Tofu Cafe, put it on your list for this weekend.
During the show, our man Larry Chen picked out some of his favorite rides to win some major prizes - a TYPE S 136” Smart Underglow Kit, and Smart LED Hood and Motorcycle Kits. If that wasn’t enough - Formula DRIFT chipped in and gave away three pairs of Saturday night main event tickets to the sold out ‘Autozone “Streets of Long Beach” presented by TYPE S’, Formula DRIFT series opener.
No one went home empty handed, though. Everyone who came out to the meet had their chance at some TYPE S swag.
We owe a big thank you to the team at Fujiwara Tofu Cafe for all the hospitality and work to make this event come together. The owner, Vincent, and his team opened up shop just for us as they were in the middle of a two week vacation, so we could bring everyone together to celebrate car culture.. Even with a thousand enthusiasts around, everyone was on their best behavior.
The cafe was the perfect place, the culture brought the perfect cars, and the people brought it all together. Looks like we’ll have to start scouting a bigger lot for our next meet.
And speaking of that…follow us on social media, and keep an eye out for more of our events, to be announced soon. For all you Formula DRIFT fans - we’re working hard to line them up with more rounds of Formula DRIFT, starting with Atlanta.
