The 2022 Formula DRIFT season is officially underway, returning to Long Beach with the AutoZone "Streets of Long Beach" presented by TYPE S series opener. This is the debut round for Adam LZ on team RTR in his 2022 AutoZone Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD along side RTR teammate Chelsea DeNofa. The event also kicks off the new Fun-Haver Tour including an all-new AutoZone activation that will be at all Formula DRIFT events in 2022.As is customary for the Long Beach Formula DRIFT event, the FD cars parade through downtown Long Beach on Thursday evening for spectators, media and passersby alike, to get the excitement pumping for the weekend. The TYPE S Pro Series LED kits lit up the streets as the sun set and took the experience to the next level.
As the event kicked off, Adam LZ was feeling good in his RTR Mustang, but exited early in the top 32 against Wataru Masuyama due to a braking mistake that saw him come close to introducing his car into the tire wall in "Turn 2" of the course. Overall, Adam is liking the new car and is excited to learn from this and bring that knowledge to Round 2 in Atlanta."Very stoked on my first event with the RTR team. Couldn’t ask for a better car or more dialed program. Although I didn’t get the result I wanted, I had a blast and was able to learn a lot from Long Beach that will help tremendously moving into the rest of the season.,” mentioned Adam LZ, RTR Motorsports Pro Formula DRIFT driver. The Long Beach event kicks off a season of challenging locales, circling the country and ending up back in California for Round 8, in Irwindale, CA."Long Beach certainly proved once again that it's an iconic Formula DRIFT event. From the massive fan turn out at the tofu house event with Larry Chen, to the record number of attendees at the parade and the sold out crowds at the main event - Long Beach fans are die hard! As always, the streets of Long Beach proved to be an unforgiving track that doesn't give you any reprieve from even the slightest error. We look forward to seeing all the teams back in the competition at Road Atlanta,” said Jared Chavez, Director of Brand Development, Horizon Brands, LLC (TYPE S).
RTR Motorsports driver, Chelsea DeNofa, in his 2022 Pennzoil BC Racing Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD, made it into the Top 8 to face champion driver Fredric Aasbo. In classic Chelsea fashion, he pushed his car to the absolute limit which unfortunately caused him to make contact with Aasbo and come to a halt. Aasbo would go on to win the battle, but DeNofa continues to show why his driving makes him a crowd favorite every time he drives."We’re always fighting the line of keeping the car competitive and being able to drive it comfortably, I think we nailed that! But unfortunately with progression comes teething and how we nailed it caused some unforeseen steering issues that I’m confident the team and I can remedy. I seriously can’t wait to drive the Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD at the next round in ATL, these cars are insane right now and have me so excited to send it down the hill there!," mentioned Chelsea DeNofa. The RTR team wraps up Round 1 sitting in 5th (DeNofa) and 18th (LZ).
The next round of the Formula DRIFT Championship is the 'AutoZone Road to the Championship' presented by TYPE S, at Michelin Raceway, in Braselton, GA (FDATL) on May 6th/7th.
